The 2019 State of Grain Marketing Report covers everything from farm demographics and trends in crop prices to challenges farmers face and key insights about how they make grain marketing decisions.

1. Growers are continuing to adopt new technologies to better understand their profitability and to help make grain marketing decisions.

More respondents reported using farm management software to track expenses than when the report was first published in 2017, up by nearly 15%.

2. Farmers who use farm management software or spreadsheets to track expenses were more likely to report knowing their cost of production per acre than those using pen and paper.

56% of growers who use farm management software or spreadsheets to track expenses know their cost of production per acres compared to 37% of growers who use pen and paper to track expenses.

3. Confidence with forward marketing continues to be a struggle.

However, fewer growers reported spot selling their grain, and more growers reported trying to forward sell more of their grain, than in 2018. 47% of growers have not sold any of their grain (responses recorded in March and April of 2019).
